Henrietta Lacks. Lived: 1920-1951 Who’s DNA was pivotal in forming modern genetics.
When tobacco farmer Henrietta Lacks was diagnosed with cervical cancer at the age of 30 in 1951, all she wanted to do was get better. Sadly, after eight months of radiation and surgery at Johns Hopkins University Hospital, Lacks and her tumor-riddled body lost the battle with the disease.
However, unbeknownst to her and her family, her cells lived on — right up until today. Known as HeLa cells (a combo of the first two letters of her first and last name), they have been multiplying since the sample was (secretly) taken from one of Lacks’ tumors and sent to Dr. George Gey’s tissue-culture research lab back in the 1950s. Not only did Lacks’ cells help scientists test the polio vaccine, HeLa cells were also sent into space.
Unfortunately, Lacks’ family didn’t find out about the grand experiment till the early 1970s when a researcher from Johns Hopkins called them. But now Rebecca Skloot’s recently released “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” will ensure history knows the unprecedented role Lacks played — and how her body revolutionized modern science.

Just finished writing an essay on Mrs. Henrietta Lacks. If you did not believe the Black Woman is God. May you understand her story. Her cells have been used for 11,000 different patents. Perfect example of how science has experimented on blacks and ultimately took advantage of her, and her family.

Childhood Stress Leaves Genetic Scars

Traumatic experiences in early life can leave emotional scars. But a new study suggests that violence in childhood may leave a genetic mark as well. Researchers have found that children who are physically abused and bullied tend to have shorter telomeres—structures at the tips of chromosomes whose shrinkage has been linked to aging and disease.
“Children who experience physical violence appear to be aging at a faster rate,” says neuroscientist and co-author Avshalom Caspi. As a result, he says, they may face increased risk of disease in adulthood and possibly shortened lifespan.

The more we research and understand stress, the more we learn about its complex nature and implications on our health, both mentally and physically. Expect a lot more of this research in the near future.

Early Stages of Bipolar Disorder
When bipolar disorder first appears, it is very difficult to diagnose. People naturally cycle through moods and in the earliest stages, people with bipolar disorder will cycle lightly- barely mania and barely depression (compared to what they will later experience). Particularly hypomania is difficult to diagnose or recognize as a problem, as it may just seem like the person is particularly happy, productive, and energetic. At the very beginning, individuals are more likely to experience major depressive episodes, and if they seek help for it, they will be diagnosed with depression. It is also important to note that depression is much more likely to be viewed as a problem than mania socially as it is a more negative emotion, even though both and their combination can be very difficult to live with and cause many problems. Furthermore, it is not unlikely for a person with bipolar disorder to have received treatment for depression, especially when their first few major depressive episodes first appear in the teenage years.
Eventually, the individual will experience a manic episode that if reported and recognized can lead to the diagnosis of bipolar disorder. If bipolar disorder continues untreated, the person will experience more cycles into depression and mania that will often increase in frequency and shorten in duration (they begin to go in and out of depression and mania more rapidly). Please note that I am saying all cases of bipolar disorder present this way, but this is a general overview of the disorder’s development. I will give EH’s views on their early stages in the next post.
